Read before you compare
- Residents are not the only people there. Downtown, the airport, and big shopping or entertainment areas draw far more people than live there, which inflates per-resident rates. Areas with very few residents are flagged and left off the rankings by default.
- Population is from the 2020 Census for every year, so rates for fast-growing areas are overstated in early years and understated in recent ones. Total incidents are not affected.
- Reported crime is not the same as crime. Neighborhoods where residents report more (or police patrol more) look worse than they may be.
- Small counts jump around. A change from 4 to 7 incidents is +75% but is mostly chance. Percent changes are shown only where the 2019 count was at least 20.
- Incidents are placed in a neighborhood using their census block group, so edges are approximate (about 6% of incidents could not be placed).
